When Rang-Tan turns up in a little girl’s bedroom, she thinks he is a nuisance. But once she had heard his story, she changes her mind.

Teaching Ideas and Resources:

English

  • Watch the Greenpeace Powerpoint and discuss the issues raised.
  • At 0.32 the style of the artwork changes. Why do you think that is? How does it make you feel?
  • Have a class debate about whether this is a suitable subject for a Christmas advert.
  • Write a letter to another retailer asking about their policy on palm oil.
  • Make an information leaflet about palm oil and deforestation.
  • Write your own poem in the same style about another animal that is in danger from human activity.

Science

  • Research orangutan habitats. What do they need to survive?
  • Make a leaflet showing how and why palm oil is used in so many products. This site is a good starting point.
  • The orangutan is not the only animal at risk from palm oil production. Research some others and make a poster to tell people about them.
  • Save packaging from a range of products and sort it into those containing palm oil and those that don’t.

Computing

Design Technology

  • Design a poster to inform people about palm oil and the effects its farming has on the environment.

Art

  • Discuss the effect of picking out one detail in a black and white image in colour, and have a go at making your own images.

Geography

  • Where is palm oil grown? Mark the areas on a map.
  • Research the impact of palm oil farming on the environment. This WWF site is a good starting point.
  • Find out about sustainably grown palm oil, what symbols tell you that the palm oil in a product has been grown sustainably?

PSHE

  • Organise a debate about palm oil debate. This Newsround article gives lots of information on the subject.
  • This is a very unusual Christmas advert. Why do you think Iceland decided to use this Greenpeace video rather than make something more Christmassy?
  • The child in the video decides to take action to help her friend. In what ways could you take action over something you didn’t agree with or thought needed to be changed?
