Teaching Ideas and Resources:

English

  • There are a number of books in this series. Could you create another book about Supertato?
  • Write a review for the book that could be added to a shelf in a bookshop or posted in an online book store.
  • Make some persuasive posters to advertise the sports day (and to encourage the veggies to compete).
  • Write a newspaper report about the sports day.
  • Review the use of punctuation in the story. Can you find any exclamation marks, question marks, quotation marks or full stops? Can you explain why they have been used in each place?
  • Retell the story from the point of view of Supertato or The Evil Pea.
  • Write a set of instructions that teach people how to control Gloria the robot.
  • The end of the story suggests that Gloria may be back. Could you write a sequel in which this happens?

Maths

  • Can you estimate, measure and compare the weight of different types of fruit and vegetables? Which ones are the heaviest?
  • Find out the prices of different types of fruit and vegetables in local shops.
  • Make a tally chart or table that shows the different types of fruit and vegetables that you eat each week.

Science

  • Make a poster that teaches the veggies about the benefits of exercise in humans.
  • The swimming competition breaks Gloria. Why is this?

Computing

  • Supertato has his own page on Facebook. Can you design some social media posts to promote the book?
  • Use publishing software to design some certificates for Gloria and the other winning veggies.
  • Record your own 'read-along' version of the story:

Art

  • Make a comic strip version of the story… or your own Supertato adventure.
  • Design your own fruit (or vegetable) themed superhero character.
  • Use Art software to create your own illustrations of Supertato and his vegetable friends.
  • Design a sports game in which the veggies have to compete against Gloria.

Music

  • Imagine that there is a new animated Supertato TV series. Can you compose a theme tune for it?

Geography

  • The packaging for fruit and vegetables sometimes shows where different fruit and vegetables were grown. Could you plot these on a map?

Physical education

  • Plan a range of activities for a ‘Sports Day’ at your school.

Languages

  • Can you find out the words for different types of fruit and vegetables in other languages?
