Barry the Fish with Fingers and the Hairy Scary Monster

Age Range: 5 - 11

Barry and his fishy friends are playing Hide and Seek. Puffy finds a great hiding place in an old wreck, but he gets scared out of his wits when he sees a hairy monster lurking in the shadows. Luckily Barry the fish with fingers comes to the rescue - and discovers that the 'monster' is a friendly seahorse who just needs a haircut!

  • Write a story that explains how the ship came to rest on the bottom of the ocean.

  • Create character profiles for each of Barry's fishy friends.

  • Think of some more words to describe the inside of the shipwreck.

  • Plan your own pirate party. What items will you need? How much might they cost?
  • Practice counting like Barry and his friends. How far can you count?

  • Find out about fish and other creatures that live underwater. Can you create a report about one of these?

Computing

  • Use a paint program to create an underwater scene.
  • Create a picture of a new fishy friend for Barry.

Design Technology

  • Design and build your own treasure chest.

Art

  • Draw or paint a picture of a shipwreck at the bottom of the ocean.
  • Look at the different shades of orange / purple within the book. Can you mix some of these shades and use them to create your own pictures?
  • Draw or paint pictures of fish / seahorses with different haircuts!

Geography

  • Draw a map that shows the places where the fish tried to hide.
  • Create your own treasure hunt and draw a map that shows someone where to find the hidden 'treasure'.

PSHE

  • Think about how Colin is feeling at different points in the story.
